calceolus x macranthos
Cypripedium ventricosum is a natural hybrid of Cypripedium macranthos x Cypripedium calceolus. Originally Cypripedium ventricosum comes as natural hybrid found in Siberia and East Asia.
The Swedish botanist Olof Swartz has described 1800 Cypripedium ventricosum for the first time.
The artificial remake of an also naturally occuring hybrid, incredibly stable and robust in its growth with a wonderfully coloured bloom. These were the irresistable reasons for us to take this cross on our plant list, despite the fact that Frosch® Exclusive Perennials normally does not want to raise natural hybrids in order to remain distinguishable from other suppliers. Cypripedium ‘Ventricosum’ grows approx. 35-45 cm (14-18 in) high and stands out through its broad leaves and the strong stem. An interesting variation of this hybrid is ’Ventricosum Pastel’.
